Sometimes I'm suprised by Utah.

In a state that is more medieval in culture than our 21st century years, there can be moments of great advancement. A small town in Utah County, the most RED of all counties in Utah, if not America, just elected Utah's VERY FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAYOR, Mia Love. Saratoga Springs located on the western shores of Utah Lake. She can be very proud to go down in Utah history as the VERY FIRST African-American mayor.

Most Utahans don't know Utah was an official slave state (1852) before the civil war, so this is a remarkable outcome that took 157 years to happen. Mia indicated that race was never an issue in the campaign. She ran on a fiscal conservative platform in a city that has had it's share of financial problems.

I give her kudos for proving conventional wisdom wrong, that a minority person could never win an election in Utah County, Salt Lake County yes, but not Utah County. There is hope that the likes of State Senator Chris Buttars ("...this bad baby is black") will fade away.

After all this is the county that hires Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck to speak at their 4th of July FREEDOM celebration and who both have spoken negatively about African-Americans, particularly Barack Obama.
