‘Boobies’ Bracelets Banned in Schools

Is it breast cancer awareness that teens and tweens are spreading or simply an excuse for them to wear rubber bracelets in school that say, “I love boobies?” Either way, it’s getting kids in hot water with school officials while those same officials are getting scolded by breast cancer awareness advocates for banning the ‘conversation starters.’

“When we had an assembly the first day of school, I basically told the students we are not insensitive to the cause,” Baltic High School Principal Jim Aisenbrey told USA Today. “I think everybody in the gym, including myself, has had a family member or relative or friend who has dealt with the issue. I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people, and I don’t think this is a proper way.”

Keep A Breast Foundation, a Carlsbad, Calif., non-profit breast cancer awareness group, is intentionally promoting the controversial bracelets to youngsters.

“The bracelet is doing what it’s meant to do — it’s making people talk,” claims Shaney Jo Darden, the organization’s founder. “That’s the whole idea, it’s getting people to talk about breast cancer, it’s getting people to share their feelings about how this disease has impacted their life,” she says.
