Obama's Afghanistan Policy, right or wrong?

Obama has finally decided what to do in Afghanistan; add 30K more troops. What it sounded like is that he was more fearful of Pakistan and needed a show of force to move that weak and chaotic government to strengthen its security forces and push the Taliban back across the border. It might also be necessary to help secure the nuclear arsenal of Pakistan to reduce the possibility of a preemptive strike on India. The situation is much different than Iraq, we know Pakistan has weapons of mass destruction, unlike the fake evidence used to justify the invasion of Iraq. The problem with Pakistan is that it has not threatened any other nation yet, so occupation is not legally possible. But on the other hand, our invasion of Iraq was illegal also, under International Law.

What is clear is that the Neo-Con's plan for perpetual political domination required continual war engagement that feed to their political strength of National Security. However, it did not work in 2008 for John McCain. The result now is a drained treasury, starting civil wars in these countries as a result of our actions, and no end game established by the prior administration to end our involvement in these civil wars. Proof of their desire to have a never ending war for political reasons.

History tells us that no occupier has ever been able to establish a functional national government in Afghanistan. Genghis Khan tried and failed, the French tried and failed, the British tried and failed, the Soviet Union tried and failed, and now NATO is trying. Why do we think we can succeed when all these other great powers did not?

Hopefully what Obama didn't say is what the actual plan might be; secure the nuclear weapons in Pakistan, hunt down Osama Bin Laden and his organization, and convince the Taliban not to assist and harbor terrorists within their borders and control. If that can be accomplished in 18 months, then we can withdraw our troops back home. It is a big task to complete in such a short period of time.

I think George W lost his only opportunity to capture Bin Laden and destroy his organization, and then teach the Taliban a lesson and withdraw. Cheney claims Obama has shown weakness for taking so long to develop his plan. I say, W established our weakness by loosing focus of why we invaded Afghanistan in the first place, dragging the war on and on, and supporting a corrupt government without demands to improve itself, and then washing his hands of it before he left office. That is weakness. Cheney is so freaked by 9/11 that he can't see anything but occupying every country that remotely might be a threat to us, now or at some time in the future.

What's your thoughts???
