A Republican President stated in 1906 to Congress what I've been saying!

Pres. Roosevelt made the above claim to the Fifty-ninth United States Congress It met in Washington, DC from March 4, 1905 to March 4, 1907, during the fifth and sixth years of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Twelfth Census of the United States in 1900. Both chambers had a Republican majority.

Senate

  • Republican (R): 59 (majority)
  • Democratic (D): 31
TOTAL: 90

House of Representatives

  • Republican (R): 251 (majority)
  • Democratic (D): 135
TOTAL: 386

Major bills passed:
  • June 8, 1906: Antiquities Act
  • June 29, 1906: Hepburn Act - which regulated the nations rail roads and rates they charged.
  • June 30, 1906: Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, ch. 3915, 34 Stat. 768
  • June 30, 1906: Meat Inspection Act
  • 1906: The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching chartered.
Here is a little trivia regarding the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906:

Coca-Cola: The Pure Food and Drug Act was initially concerned with ensuring products were labeled correctly. Later efforts were made to outlaw certain products that were not safe, followed by efforts to outlaw products which were safe but not effective. For example, an attempt to outlaw Coca-Cola in 1909 because of its excessive caffeine; caffeine replaced cocaine as the active ingredient in coca-cola in 1903. In the case United States v. Forty Barrels and Twenty Kegs of Coca-Cola, the judge found that Coca-Cola had a right to use caffeine as it saw fit, although excessive litigation costs caused Coca-Cola to settle out of court with the United States government. The caffeine amount was reduced.

Does it surprise you that a Republican controlled Congress and a Republican president were so progressive in their legislative actions?  Look at all the regulatory acts they passed.

But they still failed to pass the prohibition of corporate funding of political campaigns and parties. Even then the rich and powerful controlled the legislative branch of our government.
