Constitutional Rights Are Being Assaulted!

Our freedoms supposedly guaranteed under the Bill of Rights of our Constitution is under assault like never before.

The First Amendment is being usurped by several attacks. The anti-Islam faction want to exempt that faith from its right to practice non-violent religious belief. Yet it is OK to build a Christian church by an organization that advocates death to doctors who perform abortions, imprisoning homosexuals as predatory deviants, and also hate Jews for killing their Jesus.  There goes the separation of church and state and in comes government control of religion. Another assault is our free speech guarantee by 17 state Attorney Generals who put extreme pressure on the CEO of Craigslist for its posting of Adult Service, some of which MIGHT be for illegal prostitution. The reason they claim; two people have been victims of violence. Of course one was killed by the deranged young man in Boston and another who was assaulted in another city. I would guess that that rate is much lower than the norm in the sex trade in general given the number of ads posted nationally.

Some ultra-conservatives want to define "Free Speech" so anything they don't like can be banned, such as progressive ideas, sex in any form, non-Christian theology, etc. Is that freedom? I guess it is for those who want just that, but not for those of us who are not of that fold.

In reality it has now made it harder for law enforcement to find possible human trafficking for sex because now they will post their offerings on websites outside of America's jurisdiction and will command many more hours of investigators time in surfing the net to find these websites. Not very smart. If you have the activity contained within a small area of observation, it is much easier to recognize the truly harmful human trafficking and child sex abuse from the mainstream general adult prostitution or just nude dancing entertainment. Besides, it is rather hard to logically justify why adult prostitution is still criminal in a free society. The supposed secondary crimes all have laws governing them, why not use those laws to enforce those specific problems, such as drug trafficking. Regulate if you must with frequent health checkups and you reduce many of the health issues that many prosecutors use as a reason to outlaw the profession. Besides, those who willingly participate in the sex trade know the dangers of their profession and the smart ones take precautions; unfortunately, others do not and can be subjected to jerks that harm them. I don't need government to be a nanny for me, I'm an adult, I can figure out my risks versus any benefit, if any.

Then there are those wanting to change the 14th Amendment to no longer grant automatic citizenship to a person born within the borders of America and its territories. Very scary stuff in the name of immigration assault. Does that mean that my grandmother who was born in Mexico is an illegal and thus my mother and I are also illegal? Also my grandmother's father was a Danish immigrant during a time when citizenship was granted almost automatically when they arrived on the ship. Would he be considered illegal under the new terms being talked about? What then if we are declared illegal, where would we be deported to? Mexico or Denmark, neither place I can speak the language. But if it has to be one, give me Denmark. Love that country.

There are several Republicans that want to repeal the 17th Amendment granting popular vote for Senators in Congress rather than appointed by state legislatures. Do you want to give up a right to choose who your Senator is? Do you want to give that power back to such extreme legislatures as Utah's? What we do need to do is reform the primary election process to allow a popular vote of the people, by party if necessary, to pick who runs in the general election. But hey that is true democracy (democrat) and we can't have a democracy in a Republic (republican)! Right?

The Republican party that professes to be stall worth protector of the Constitution sure want to modify it. Orrin Hatch still wants an amendment to make flag disrespect a federal crime. Some want an amendment to take civil liberties away from certain citizens (Gays) because they do not meet the acceptability of many judo-christian beliefs.Others want to remove part, if not all, of the civil rights legislation passed in 1964 so we can have Jim Crow back, equal but separate.

We are at a very defining time in our history. Will the nation remain an open and free society. Or will it turn into an oppressed nation governed under strict conservative-religious laws? Only time will tell.
