The claim that mainstream media has a liberal bias is a fabrication. The constant clamoring that it is a propaganda machine for Liberals is designed and calculated to intimidate the mainstream press. Thus the press will lean more to the right-wing to show it is balanced, when in fact it is not. It starts to lean too far right and becomes a propaganda machine of the right-wing.
Rush Limbaugh uses this approach just before the debates, so that the news people who are the moderators will be softer on the Republican and harder on the Democrat in an unconscious attempt to look fair and balanced. It worked very well in the 2010 election cycle. Already Rush has made the statement that all those chosen to moderate are lefties. Even Candy Crowley of CNN who is known in the news industry as being more right of center and is not liberal at all in her reporting. Jim Lehrer (PBS) and Bob Schieffer (CBS) are old school journalists and have demonstrated they can be critical of both political ideologies.
Of note is that the Romney campaign stated emphatically that they would not participate in the debates if any MSNBC anchors were chosen to moderate. They are so fearful of them asking hard questions and Romney knows they have the facts and figures to challenge any lies that Romney will have to utter, given that he has lied so much during the campaign that he can't make truthful statement in the debates.
Know I would like to see Chris Mathews, Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart as the moderators, all three of them together at each debate. It would be lively and confrontational on both sides.
